John le CarrĂ©. He is brilliant at using the thriller format to tackle contemporary themes – political, social and personal. Like Conan Doyle, he has created a unique world, and has managed to retain his integrity while remaining consistently readable.
What's the first book you remember reading?
Living in Africa as a child, I had this rather incongruous passion for the very English adventures stories of Enid Blyton. More linked to the environment I lived in – and I really cannot remember which came first – I loved The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling.
